Brand Philosophy
Our Concept
SELUM is an independent label dedicated to making Selvedge Denim jeans.
For years, we have studied how pattern construction and sewing techniques work together in selvedge denim jeans. Body shape and movement guide the development of each product, while pattern development, cutting and sewing are continually brought together, tested and refined at every stage. We sew sample after sample to test the ideas we want each design to express. The process is long and demanding—a cycle of breaking down and rebuilding time and again—but it is work we love. With every attempt, we deepen our understanding of how the distinctive pattern structures of selvedge denim jeans interact with a wide range of body types, helping us create better solutions for different wearers.
SELUM grew out of this process.
We have never been interested only in the appearance of vintage jeans. What truly draws us is the design logic behind them and the consideration they show for the people who wore them.
We are fascinated by what lies beneath their minimal appearance: practical function, ingenious cuts shaped around the body, the different character created by the machines of each era, and the clever joins and interdependent pattern pieces that work together as a whole. Together, they give vintage jeans their distinctive beauty and make them enduring classics.
We keep exploring, learning through reflection and hands-on work with yarn, fabric, sewing thread and machines. Only through making can we begin to see the complexity behind apparent simplicity. We try to bring that same spirit to our products. For us, stripping away the unnecessary is a process of setting the self aside, allowing everything to become more natural and enduring.

Our vision, put into practice
What should you look for in a thoughtfully designed pair of raw selvedge jeans?
We begin with the fabric: its character and how much it will shrink. These properties guide the cut and construction, helping us develop the right fit for that particular cloth.
What cuts are best suited to fabrics of different weights, thicknesses and densities? How will the rise, leg width and overall length change as the fabric passes through the sewing machine? Will those changes compromise the design or improve it? We consider these factors and test their effects in advance. Some fabrics shrink considerably—5–6% across the weft and as much as 10–15% along the warp—while others shrink very little. We do not shy away from the complications of shrinkage; instead, we treat shrinkage as a design condition and put it to work. Even the sewing machine’s thread tension is incorporated into the design. Used with care, those factors can become powerful tools in shaping the garment. The way that structure develops plays a vital role in how well the finished product accommodates the body. We resolve the risks created by these variables during development so that we can carry the same understanding into how we present the product and advise our customers.
Every pair is cut and sewn individually. Working one pair at a time helps us carry the design through faithfully, keep variations in sewing to a minimum, and give critical construction details the attention they need.
Each size is developed as a fit in its own right. Rather than simply grading one style into a full size range, we develop patterns for different body proportions. Our aim is for each product to have its own individual number, identifying a distinct fit rather than just a size within a style.
With raw denim, our work is only the first half of the design. You complete the rest by wearing it. Over time, the fabric takes on the creases, fades and marks of your daily life, becoming a record that belongs to you alone.
When choosing SELUM, ask us which of our available fits comes closest to your build. If none is right for you, we would rather you wait than settle for a poor fit. We hope a future release will offer the fit you are looking for. What looks like a single style can become an evolving family of individually numbered fits. An old Chinese saying puts it this way: “One gives rise to two, two to three, and three to all things.” From a simple starting point, countless possibilities can emerge. We hope that, as our work develops, you will find a pair of selvedge jeans that feels truly your own.

Our Vision
Looking Ahead
We want to build SELUM through ongoing research and the steady development of selvedge denim jeans.
What matters most to us is whether each product truly responds to the needs of different body types: whether the fabric and its shrinkage are put to full use; whether pattern and construction work together; and whether the jeans feel natural to wear, endure over time and carry the marks of the wearer’s life.
As SELUM grows, we hope every wearer will eventually find the pair that feels truly their own.
